San Giorgio. Storie , immagini e identità dall’Oriente a Genova
MUSEI NAZIONALI DI GENOVA – PALAZZO REALE – TEATRO DEL FALCONE
31 October 2025 – 1 March 2026

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to St. George, one of the four patron saints of Genoa along with St. Lawrence, St. John the Baptist and St. Bernard. As such, he is a recurring figure in religious imagery, on the altars of the city’s main churches and, since the Middle Ages, on official documents, works of art and objects linked to the city’s history.
The Teatro del falcone will host a narrative that will begin with the relationship between the city of Genoa and the saint, then move on to explore his warrior nature and the Byzantine origins of his image – evoked thanks to precious, finely illuminated manuscripts – before illustrating his most common and recognisable iconographic attributes. Several works of goldsmithing, from fascinating collections and museums, will constitute a separate section, while the conclusion of the exhibition will once again be dedicated to Genoa and the significant and precious traces that still bear witness to its connection with St George.
Among all the paintings on display, we would like to highlight those by Cosmè Tura and Ercole de’ Roberti (Venice, Fondazione Cini), Vittore Carpaccio (Venice, Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore), Andrea Mantegna (Venice, Gallerie dell’Accademia), a 15th-century painter from Brescia (Brescia, Fondazione Brescia Musei, Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo) and Luchino da Milano (Palazzo San Giorgio, Genoa).
