The Flagellation of Christ
white marble,1680s
The Chapel of The Passion
This magnificent sculpture present a moving image of the suffering, exhausted Christ collapsing beside the column of the flagellation. The artist, a follower of Bernini trained in Rome, seems to sublimate the pain of the scourged Christ in the almost ecstatic expression of the face and the refined elegance of the carving in accordance with the requirements of a space reserved for private devotion.
